In order to further strengthen judicial cooperation through a better knowledge of national legal frameworks and other best practices in judicial cooperation in criminal matters, the PCJS, through the network of focal points, also plays an important role in the exchange of relevant and useful information to progress in the execution of requests for mutual legal assistance and extradition.
In order to accelerate the processing of requests for judicial cooperation, which are often necessary in terrorism cases, the focal points are tasked to monitor the processing of these requests by liaising with the competent authorities in charge of their execution.

Improving judicial cooperation in criminal matters necessarily entails strengthening the capacity of criminal justice stakeholders to draft and deal effectively with requests for mutual legal assistance and extradition in particular. The role of the PCJS focal points is also to identify the technical assistance needs that UNODC and other partners can address.
